When I look outside I see winter, but when I close them I see our open water season on the horizon. We often get asked by customers about different fishing opportunities based on the calendar month. We have such amazing fishing here on Rainy Lake. Many people don't know that both Smallmouth and Northern Pike are open continuously. Having an opportunity to fish these fish early May can be incredible!! Here is a brief description of where we tend to focus our efforts by calendar month.April- Rainy River Walleyes and Sturgeon.May- Monster Pike, Walleyes, Smallies, Crappies in shallow water. Sometimes we can even sight fish!! Suspending stick baits, jigs and plastics are incredibly fun. We also have clients bring fly rods this time of year!!June- Crappies in and around spawning grounds. Hard to beat a sinking bobber on on monster slabs!! Walleyes, Smallmouth bass and Large pike get very active in shallow water. Casting and long line trolling are very fun and effective.July- Most all fish have slid deeper presenting great jig, crankbait, spinner rig and the beginning of a glide bait bite. August- Fish are settled in to deeper patterns and susceptible to crankbaits, glide baits and jigs.September- Crappies tend to be grouped back up over deep mud. Walleyes and Pike are on the chew on deeper reef structure. ... See MoreSee Less
